About The Artist:

Henry François Farny was an American painter and illustrator of French birth. Born in Ribeauvillé, Alsace in 1847, Farny and his family emigrated from France to the United States in 1853. Farny's mother was a skilled nurse and administered care to residents of their rural Warren County, Pennsylvania community and neighboring Indian reservation. There he fostered a life-long interest in Native American life and culture.

Farny worked as an illustrator for Harper’s Weekly in Cincinnati, Ohio, and travelled to Düsseldorf and then to Munich to study. He adopted the precise and meticulous linear style of the Düsseldorf school. Around this time, he was introduced to Albert Bierstadt, a leading painter of the American West.

After returning from study in Europe, Farny embarked on his first journey to the West in 1881. He was fascinated by the recent surrender of Chief Sitting Bull and set out to witness it firsthand. He returned to the Plains and Sioux Indian Territory throughout his career and dedicated his practice to recording sensitive portrayals of Native American culture.
