About The Artist:

Hans Gustav Burkhardt was an American painter, printmaker, and art collector. He was born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1904. After moving to New York City in 1924, he became an active member of the New York School. The artist moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1937, where he lived until his death in 1994.

While in New York, Burkhardt became acquainted with Cubism and Abstract Expressionism and his contemporary Willem de Kooning. Burkhardt studied at the Cooper Union and the Grand Central School of Art, where he was introduced to Arshile Gorky. Burkhardt worked closely with Gorky, a friend, mentor, and fellow artist with whom he frequently collaborated. In his words: "...I met Gorky and saw abstract art for the first time. I knew this was what I had looked for all my life. He helped me to believe in myself, in my own vision".

He later became involved with the West Coast movements Hard Edge, California Light, Minimalist, and Pop Art after moving to Los Angeles. Burkhardt was a teacher of the American painter Anderson Brooks.

Burkhardt's work has been exhibited extensively, including shows at the Stendhal Gallery, Los Angeles. His work is represented in numerous major public collections, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Kunstmuseum Basel.
