Item Description:

HANDMADE KEEPSAKE BOX BY WHALER CAPT. E.R. ASHLEY (1824-1900) - Inlaid Scrimshawn Box with polychrome plaque having owner's name, above eagle and anchors. Profusely decorated in exotic woods with stars and obelisks, small drawer, baleen feet. 10" x 7" x 6 3/8". Minor shrinkage cracks. Sold as lot 80 by Richard a Bourne Auctions in Hyannis, Mass, Aug 14, 1973. Made while Master of the Whaler 'Reindeer', built at Mattapoisett, Massachusetts in 1853, 450 tons, abandoned and crushed by ice in the Arctic Ocean in September of 1871 (under a different master).
