About The Artist:

Gertrude Barrer was born in New York City in 1921. As a teenager, she enrolled in the Art Student's League where she studied with Will Barnet, and later attended the University of Iowa. She got her first big break in a 1946 exhibition held at Gallery Neuf, New York, titled "8 and a Totem Pole". The group show featured the work of seven other painters from the the "Indian Space" movement.

Barrer's art continued to evolve over the years. She moved to Roxbury, Connecticut in 1959 with her husband, the artist, Frank Russell. There she produced paintings, ceramics, murals, prints and sculpture. Her work has been exhibited extensively and is well represented in important private and public collections. She died in Connecticut in 1997.
