Lofty says:

“Gertrude Barrer spent her later years living and working in a studio in Roxbury, CT. These abstracts never get old for me as one can look at them at length and let one's own imagination decide what they are about. They are also compatible with various styles of furniture and decorative arts if one likes to mix things up a bit. For example, this work would work with Art Deco, Mid-Century, and would even add a little pizzazz to more traditional 18th and 19th century decorative styles not so popular right now.” - Ursula LeBaron

About The Artist:

Gertrude Barrer was born in New York City in 1921. As a teenager, she enrolled in the Art Student's League where she studied with Will Barnet, and later attended the University of Iowa. She got her first big break in a 1946 exhibition held at Gallery Neuf, New York, titled "8 and a Totem Pole". The group show featured the work of seven other painters from the the "Indian Space" movement.

Barrer's art continued to evolve over the years. She moved to Roxbury, Connecticut in 1959 with her husband, the artist, Frank Russell. There she produced paintings, ceramics, murals, prints and sculpture. Her work has been exhibited extensively and is well represented in important private and public collections. She died in Connecticut in 1997.
