About The Artist:

George R. James is an American artist who lives and works in California. Though much of James' early work was done in oil on canvas, he is an avid and highly skilled watercolorist. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees at the California State University, Long Beach. He extensively studied California Scene painters, those who painted the landscapes of California during the early to mid twentieth century, like Rex Brandt and Phil Dike. In his own work, James developed an abstract style where his forms often interact with geometric shapes. He became a celebrated California painter when his work started to be sold and exhibited in local galleries. Since, he has exhibited internationally, including at the 2007 Jiangsu Watercolor Society International Watercolor Exhibition in Nanjing, China. James has won several prestigious national awards and has been featured in many articles and books. James has been sharing his knowledge and skills with students at the California State University Fullerton since 1968 as Professor 'Emeritus' of Art. James is a member of American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society.

James' recent experimentation with a synthetic paper called Yupo allows him to gain a richer color than he would have on watercolor paper. Yupo calls for the painstaking process of careful layering on of the pigments, which nicely accommodate James' cubist experiments with color and design.

Painted in 1968, 'Anacortes II' depicts a group of houses on the Padilla Bay near Anacortes, Washington. Anacortes is the point of departure for those traveling by boat to the San Juan Islands. In this work, houses are clustered on top of the rocky bank of the bay, and winding stairs lead the viewer up to the front porch of the large central house, where two figures stand. Tall evergreen trees surround the small group of homes. The vivid landscape scene is painted in strong, bold colors with large brush strokes, and the homes and cliffs are treated as if they were geometric forms rather than objects.
