GENERAL MALTBY'S DISCHARGE FROM THE ARMY - Feb 16, 1815, Discharge of Brigadier General Isaac Maltby from command of the Second Brigade, Fouurth Division of the Militia of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, signed by Governor John Brooks. 7 1/2" x 12". Separated at fold, edge chips and stains, autograph is very good. Isaac Maltby (1767-1819) was a 1786 graduate of the Yale School of Divinity, 1803 was appointed as Major to the Mass Militia, 1813 made Brig Gen, was responsible for the defense of Boston Harbor during the War of 1812, elected to Mass Legislature in 1816, wrote several books, including "Elements of War" and "Military Tactics", standard training texts at West Point. John Brooks (1752-1825), trained privately as a Medical Doctor, was the 11th Governor of Mass 1816-1823. At age 20 he led the first troops that arrived at Concord and Lexington, was a drill master at Valley Forge under Von Steuben, took part in many battles, including Monmouth and Saratoga, was Master of the Washington Masonic Grand Lodge, a 'traveling lodge' that followed the troops during the Revolutionary War.
