Shiavax Chavda studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art between 1930 and 1935. His technical skill was perfected during his time at art school both in Mumbai, and then later in London at the Slade School and in Paris at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere.

Chavda always retained a strong interest in classical Indian and Western dance and music, and it was these dancers and musicians that would become some of his most favoured subjects. His works were known for their lyrical, bold lines which he used with great effect. Even in the current work, it is the strong, black outlines that lend the dancers a powerful unity of movement as they perform their steps, supported by the three musicians who provide the rhythm and tempo; both male and female performers bound by a common palette and use of line.

Chavda worked closely with other artists of the Bombay Group including Hari Ambadas Gade and Krishna K. Hebbar, with whom he shared a close friendship.
