EXTREMELY RARE ENGLISH PROCLAMATION -

Item Description:

EXTREMELY RARE ENGLISH PROCLAMATION - Cromwell's 24 Feb 1654 Proclamation banning Horse Racing. Housed in a custom blue leather folio, with the bookplate of Harry Worcester Smith (1865-1945), Master of the Hounds in Virginia and promoter of the 1905 match between British and American fox hunters on his land in that state. A textile magnate from Worcester, Mass., Smith was the leading proponent of hunting in the US, had a huge library relating to horses, racing and hunting. In two pieces, roughly 11" square each, on laid paper with Cromwell's watermark. Very good, clean condition. Includes a 1931 letter from the dealer in New York. One flap of the silk-lined folio is off, but present. A remarkable survivor of an expendable and hated broadside.
