About The Artist:

The rebellious French artist and writer Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was born to a prosperous family of wine merchants. In his youth Dubuffet rejected the privilege of the upper class and in 1924 left France to work in an Argentinian factory. Upon returning to Europe, he entered the family business and continued to paint, but was drafted into the French army in 1939, where he was briefly imprisoned for failing to salute an officer. When he was discharged at the age of 41, he decided to leave the wine trade and pursue art full-time. Dubuffet spent the next four decades creating an impressive body of work including paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and theoretical writings. He traveled to Switzerland to study Art Brut (known in the United States as Outsider Art), idiosyncratic works outside the traditional boundaries of fine art executed without financial compensation or intent to exhibit in a traditional gallery environment. He valued what he saw as the inherent purity of Art Brut, created without the self-conscious and corrupt influences of the commercial mainstream. In 1962, he invented the unique style “L’Hourloupe,” characterized by a network of dark-outlined white cells accented with solid fields of color, often red or blue. This would be Dubuffet’s mature style, characterizing his work across media until his death in 1985.
