Item Description:

EUGENE GUSTAVOVITCH BERMAN (NY/CA/Russia/France/Italy, 1899-1972) - Costume Design for 'Pulcinella', ink and watercolor on paper, initialed and dated 1972 bottom center, in silver leaf molded frame, matted and glazed in Rome, OS: 15 1/2" x 10 1/2", SS: 9 1/2" x 4 5/8". Fine condition. Berman was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. He came to the United States in 1937 and became one of the most respected designers of the American ballet theater. Among his productions include Frederick Ashton's 'Devil's Holiday' (1939), George Balanchine's 'Concerto Barocco' (1941), 'Danses Concertantes' (1944), 'Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme' (1944), and 'Pulcinella' (1972) for the Stravinsky Festival. He retired to Rome, Italy where he died on December 14, 1972.
