About The Artist:

Emile Merlot was a 19th century French painter. He specialized in landscape painting, especially those that had cattle. Though the 19th century is considered the Golden Age of landscape painting, with the advent of the Barbizon School, it was also the last century of sporting and animal painting as a genre. Since the 17th century, artists who specialized in animals were considered the lowest castes of artists. Exceptional animal artists, who specialized in a particular species, saw great success. The most notable of these artists is Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, who specialized in dogs and horses.

This painting of a peasant girl driving cattle is typical of Merlot's work. Merlot's style was grounded in realism and he used small brush strokes to capture small details and to attain an enamel like surface. Pastoral scenes like this one, which romanticized or idealized rural life in the countryside were made popular in the 19th century by urban patrons who were nostalgic for country life.
