About The Artist:

Émile Bernard was a French painter, printmaker, and art critic. He traveled to Italy in 1893 and Cairo, Egypt, where he lived until 1903/1904. Like his contemporary, Paul Gauguin, Bernard shared an interest in folk subjects, and 'primitive' lifestyles. The pyramids suggest that this portrait was executed in Cairo.
