About The Artist:

Edward William Cooke (E. W. Cooke) (1811-1880) was born in London to the artist George Cooke, and was trained by his father at an early age. In 1820, at the age of nine, E. W. Cooke made illustrations published in the Scottish horticulturist John Claudius Loudon's "Encyclopedia of Plants." He was particularly adept and passionate about marine subjects, and produced a book of 50 plate engravings on the subject of sea vessels, "Fifty Plates of Shipping and Craft", at age 18.

Cooke began working in oils in 1833 and exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy and British Institution in 1835. He travelled extensively and was also interested in botany, geology, archeology, and natural history. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1863 and a Royal Academician in 1864. In the late 1860s, Cooke commissioned the British architect R. Norman Shaw to design his residence, Glen Andred (originally constructed as Rockhurst), at Groombridge in Kent, England. He died there in 1880.

This painting displays Cooke's mastery at depicting maritime subjects and his skill as a draughtsman. The short brushstrokes that he used to create the small waves in the still water are portrayed with accuracy worthy of Willam van de Velde, an artist he much admired and whose work he copied during a visit to Amsterdam in 1837. The boats and gear are meticulously painted in characteristic fine detail.
