A letter from the scholar Mary Leonhard Ran confirming authenticity accompanies this painting. Ms. Ran is currently preparing the Edward Henry Potthast catalog raisonné. According to Ms. Ran, Potthast may have been in love with the married woman depicted wearing her wedding ring in this portrait.
