About The Artist:

Edna L. Bernstein (b. 1848) was an American artist who resided on Park Avenue in New York City. She was an active member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors and the American Woman's Club. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, several exhibitions of Bernstein's oil paintings of flowers were held in New York City, notably "Her Flowers in Oil", held in 1936 at Kleeman Galleries. She also exhibited her work at the well-known Durand Ruel Galleries, also in New York City.

Collectors especially loved Bernstein's large, detailed paintings depicting the enlarged stamens and pistils of beautiful flowers at such close length they almost appear abstracted. The New York Sun reviewing the artist's 1934 show noted that she painted with a "suggestion from Georgia O'Keeffe", her famous contemporary whose style was similar to her own. O'Keeffe painted close views of flowers' reproductive organs to set herself apart from her male contemporaries and to comment on sexuality.

This image of a magnolia, painted in 1937, was created during Bernstein's most active artistic period. In this painting, she limits her color palette, creating a rhythmic composition of white petals surrounding the bright yellow stamen of the flower. Bernstein's skills as a colorist and draughtswoman are evident in her careful rendering of the petals and the cool white tones of the painting. She creates a sense of perspective in the work, difficult in a mostly monochromatic white composition, by depicting the lower petals in the foreground in more detail than those at the back of the composition. Bernstein has also painted the yellow of the intricate stamen reflecting off of the white of the petals in the foreground, giving the work even more depth. This painting, an ode to the timeless beauty of nature, showcases Bernstein's mastery of her craft.
