Item Description:

EARLY 19TH C. HUDSON VALLEY PORTRAIT - "Mrs. Benjamin Akin, Sr." (Rensselaer County, New York), oil on mahogany panel, identified on old handwritten label verso, in the original gold and mahogany ogee frame, OS: 38" x 32", SS: 29 1/2" x 23 1/2". Good condition. Mrs. Akin (1768-1850), born Martha Palmer, daughter of John Palmer II and Hope Thomas, was the wife of Dr. Benjamin Akin, Sr. (1762-1831) of East Greenbush, NY. They had 13 children. The good doctor, a Member of the New York State Assembly, drowned while crossing a frozen river on a house call.
