About The Artist:

Dorothea Tanning was born in Illinois in 1910 and had a fascinating life and career in fine arts - creating paintings, drawings, prints, collages and soft sculptures - as well as writing later in life. She met fellow artist Max Ernst (at the time married to Peggy Guggenheim) in 1942 and spent the next thirty-four years with him until his death in 1976. Together they would live and work in Sedona, Arizona, Paris, and the French countryside. After her husband's death, Tanning eventually moved back to the United States and concentrated on her poetry and writing. She died in her Manhattan apartment in 2012.

Dorothea Tanning's early work is Surrealist, with minutely painted details in dream-like scenarios. Later in her life, her work became more abstract but often still incorporated the female form. The Schlesinger-Boisante Gallery in New York held an exhibition of Tanning's works on paper in 1983; it is possible that this work was acquired at that time.
