About The Artist:

Doris Chase was a renowned sculptor, painter and video artist. A native of Seattle and member of the Northwest School, Chase had her first solo exhibition in 1956 and her first international showing in Rome in 1962. Pushing past the prejudice she encountered as a female artist, Chase gained national recognition when she moved to New York in 1972 to live in the famed Chelsea Hotel. Chase’s explorations with media were profound. This early ground-breaking experimentation with form in video led to collaborations with dancers interacting with her sculptures, as well as partnerships with feminist poets, playwrights and actors. Meanwhile, she was also transforming steel and wood into sculpture, resulting in numerous commissions for large public works, such as the iconic Changing Form(1971) in Seattle’s Kerry Park.

Doris Chase has received many honors and awards including the Washington State Governor's Award for the Arts (1992); Doris Chase Day, City of Seattle (1999); Doris Chase Annual Scholarship Award, University of Washington School of Art (2002); College Art Association Women's Tribute (2004); and the Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Achievement (2004). Her works are featured in numerous collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Art Institute of Chicago, Seattle Art Museum, Pompidou Center (Paris), and Smithsonian American Art Museum.
