About The Artist:

Claude Venard was a French painter most well-known for his stilllifes and landscapes. Venard was very much a part of the modernist vanguard, and eschewed the rigorous curriculum of the École des Beaux-Arts. As a fledgling artist, Venard supported himself by working as an Old Master paintings conservator at the Louvre. In 1936, he exhibited with the Forces Nouvelles, a somewhat fragmented, left-leaning band of French painters. Pierre Tal-Coat and Roger de la Fresnaye, were among the most influential members of the group. Venard's first solo exhibition was held at the Galerie Barreiro, Paris, in 1944. His work has been characterized as post-Cubist, and often employs sophisticated spatial and compositional schema. In the 1950s, Venard's works became increasingly abstracted while he favored a more exuberant palette.
