About The Artist:

Standing in contrast to the photorealist portraiture typical of Close, this early abstract oil was painted by the artist while he was a student at Everett Community College in Everett, WA, and still operating under the influence of the Abstract Expressionists, including Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning.

Although Close eventually decided to abandon Abstract Expressionism because he felt his efforts were weak in comparison to the leaders of the movement, this early work nonetheless shows a confident and accomplished application of paint and is a fine example of the stylistic evolution of this major American artist.
