Item Description:

Kangxi period, with a court scene, probably from an historical play or novel, showing musicians and other attendants with an official in an open pavilion, surrounded by a 'brocade' diaper pattern border in copper red with various crane medallions throughout, the base with an artemisia leaf mark in blue, d. 14-1/2 in. [clean breaks with old repairs] Note: This charger belongs to a group of known Kangxi dishes of similar design, illustrated in Krahl and von Spee, "Chinese Ceramics from the Gulexuan Collection," Germany, 2003, nos. 101 and 102. Another was included in the exhibition "Weaving China's Past: The Amy S. Clague Collection of Chinese Textiles", Phoenix Art Museum, 2000, no. 15; and one is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, from the Saltin Bequest (accession no. C.1202-1910).
