About The Artist:

Taylor is clearly remembering the John Sloan masterpiece showing the same subject, women drying their hair in the sun, which broke ground for the Eight's emphasis on Social Realism. Taylor was trained as an architect and his work often focused on architectural motifs, as in the Gambrel slate roof here, which makes for a beautiful painting.

Ashcan realist Taylor painted in Philadelphia after studying in New York at the National Academy of Design, where this painting won the prestigious Benjamin Altman Prize in the Landscape category in 1954. It was subsequently exhibited at the NAD 130th annual exhibition for 1955. The Academy then purchased the painting through the Henry Ward Ranger Fund and subsequently gifted it to the Montclair Art Museum.
