About The Artist:

Charles "Charlie" Bell was an American landscape artist who was active in the 1930s in Sacramento, California. He was born in California around 1913. Bell first gained notoriety when he won third place in a logo contest for Sacramento's East Lawn Memorial Park in 1929. His three drawing submissions earned him the prize of $10. In the 1930's, Bell studied art at the Sacramento Junior College, now Sacramento City College. After surviving the Great Depression and apprenticing with well known Sacramento architect Frank Williams, Bell and his wife Laura started their own business designing and building homes in the Arden-Arcade and Sacramento area.

It is believed that Bell mentored Thomas Kinkade when Kinkade was growing up in nearby Placerville in the 1960s. Kinkade, self described as "the master of light", would go on to be a prolific painter specializing in American pastoral works, or idealized scenes of the countryside.

Bell's landscapes are characterized by broad brushstrokes and possibly the use of a palette knife to apply thick swathes of color to the canvas. To add dimension and texture to the landscape's bushes and trees, Bell scratched paint away to reveal the canvas underneath. A quiet stream leads the viewer's attention from the foreground to the background. The reflections of the scenery in the stream are not lost with Bell's expressive and broad brushwork. Bell used local, or true to life colors, to produce a naturally harmonious color scheme that adds to the tranquility of the scene.
