Carnival / La Habana. 1957.
This vibrant silkscreen design announces the 1957 Carnival season in Havana, Cuba. At this time, Cuba's tensions were high: Castro's 26th of July Movement gained power, Batista desperately tried to maintain control, and one can assume that Carnival offered either a way to blow off steam—or a cause for concern. In Santiago, many civic groups appealed to have Carnival canceled due to feared violence, but the mayor did not concede, leading to "forced carnivals" in July of 1957. We can only hope that Havana's was a more peaceful celebration.
