BRAHMS, JOHANNES (1883-1897)

BRAHMS, JOHANNES (1883-1897)

Item Description:

Autograph musical quotation of Var. IV from the Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn (the "St. Anthony Variations"), op. 56, the theme written in pen as a two-stave piano reduction showing the first three bars, signed and inscribed underneath 'Zu Frdl. Erinnerung / J. Brahms' and dated indistinctly, 'Wien Oct 85', 7-7/8 x 6 in. (sheet)

Considered by most music historians as the first major orchestral work written in the Theme-and-Variations form, Brahms's Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn is one of his best known works, written in the summer of 1873 at Tutzing in Bavaria. Brahms took his theme from a wind ensemble composition entitled 'Chorale St. Antoni', a work likely written by a lesser-known composer but attributed to Haydn in the 19th Century by printers looking to move inventory (a not uncommon practice at the time). While the theme today remains unattributed, we are grateful that its existence in the 19th Century inspired one of the most enduring works of the orchestral canon.
