About The Artist:

Julius Lindner was a nineteenth century Austrian artist known for his genre scenes of daily life in Austrian villages. Genre paintings are of scenes of everyday occurrences and settings such as market places or domestic interiors. Genre scenes were popular with artists during the nineteenth century as religious and historical paintings declined in demand. The nineteenth century saw the loosening of the church's grip on daily life as well as the demand for art depicting its consumers. There was also a trend to romanticize, or idealize, peasant life.

In this painting, a winter landscape scene, Lindner depicts three peasant women gathering branches to use for firewood. Their horse waits patiently to carry the scant load home. Lindner does not idealize the women, but paints them with the humble realism afforded to their position. These women's clothes are coarse and they are not dressed well enough to keep out the cold, but their comfort and livelihood depend on the branches they are scavenging to heat their homes.

Lindner painted these peasant women with short, flat brushstrokes, and added interest to the painting through his depiction of the trees. The tree bark is composed of broad strokes of muted color, and the textured green moss growing off of the trunks adds color to the otherwise drab winter scene. This painting is a "genre scene" because Lindner chose to focus on peasant life and the taxing daily chore of gathering tinder, a task that an upper class person, as the buyer of this painting probably was, did not do for himself.
