About The Artist:

Soren Emil Carlsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1853. He studied architecture at the Kongelige Danske Kunstakadem in Copenhagen, and later immigrated to the United States in 1872. Carlsen taught at the Academy of Design in Chicago, Illinois, then spent a period of time in Paris, France, where he met and began working with the important New York dealer Theron J. Blakeslee. Carlsen's mature work was heavily influenced by the style of the French artist Jean-Baptiste Simeon Chardin (1699-1779), also a master of still life painting.
After returning to the United States in 1887, Carlsen became one of the most famous painters of kitchen-themed still life paintings in America, notably painting images of fish, game and glass bottles. He competed with his rival, the painter William Merritt Chase. The most important exhibition of Carlsen's work held during his lifetime was organized in 1923 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where Arthur Edwin Bye called him ''unquestionably the most accomplished master of still-life painting in America''. He died in New York in 1932.
