Item Description:

Oil on masonite with charcoal preparatory drawing. Painting was found with drawing adhered to surface. Painting unsigned. Drawing with two inscriptions stating that drawing was done by Amaza Converse (according to his obituary Converse was the studio assistant of Grant Wood at the university) in 1938 under the direction of Grant Wood. Painting possibly by Grant Wood with the assistance of Converse. Dimensions: (Painting) (Frame) H 20.5" x W 26.5", (Canvas) H 18" x W 24", (Drawing) (Frame) H 21.25" x W 25.25", (Paper) H 17.25" x W 21.25" Condition: Painting surface with some abrasions and loss to paint where drawing had adhered. Also uncleaned and dirty. Drawing in good condition with extensive fixative spray. Marks on back from the painting.
