艾利·斯密特《村廟》1995 年作 亞克力 木板
款識::Arie Smit '95(左下)

Arie Smit, whose evocations of sun-drenched scenes of Bali is well sought after, is considered a master of Indonesian art.In 1938, Smith was sent to the Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia) for military service, where he worked as a lithographer for the Dutch army's Topographical Service in Batavia (Jakarta) and made maps of the archipelago.

During his lifetime, Smit often experimented with refreshing permutations of familiar scenes of the Balinese countryside. His works evoke the use of light and colors typical in late 19th century Impressionism, but he never painted on location. He would sketch outdoors and then recreate the works back in his studio. Elements of early 20th century Fauvism also appear in his works, but his style mostly evolved in the period when he lived and worked in Bali. Smit is a master of color and composition. Repetitive elements, often simplified to their very essence, create visual rhythms. His vibrant paintings focus on the people and places of Bali with his own special "broken colors" technique, that reveals the beauty and rhythm of the Balinese culture.
