Literature:

Well-known for his paintings of fertile rice fields, Balinese temple gateways, and scenes of village life, the works of Arie Smit exhibits the culturally rich landscape of Balinese villages which glorifies the harmonious relationship between man and nature. Born in Zaandam, the Netherlands, Arie Smit first arrived in Indonesia (then known as East Indiës) through a military post with the Netherlands Royal Army where he was assigned as a lithographer based in Djakarta and Bandung. Under the Japanese Occupation, Smit was forced to serve as a prisoner of war which greatly contributed to his journey as an artist. The painstaking experience at war is often reflected through his landscapes paintings that conveyed the spirit of his early lives. In 1951, Smit became an Indonesian citizen and dedicates the rest of his life to art, eventually moving to Bali in 1956 where he remained till his death.

Smit’s impressionistic style paintings employing the use of controlled lines, known as ‘broken colours’, creates a unique effect indicative of the artist’s blending technique, further emphasizing on the concept of unity and harmony in his paintings. In Pemandangan (Landscape), the vast landscape of Balinese padi field encompasses the entirety of the canvas. Yet, emerging on the right side of the painting is unmistakably an outline of a temple married into the palette of green and blue of its surrounding.
