Apocryphal Letter of Jesus to Abgar, King of Edessa on vellum

Apocryphal Letter of Jesus to Abgar, King of Edessa on vellum

Item Description:

An extremely important vellum letter, c. 7th-8th Century AD, penned in Coptic script, containing an apocryphal letter of Jesus to Abgar, King of Edessa. An excerpt from the letter reads 'The letter of Jesus Christ Son of God to Abgar, the king of Edessa_It is I, Jesus. I am the one who wrote this letter with my own hand. No power of the adversary will be able to enter into the place where one affixes this manuscript.'. This excerpt is followed by a list of names, perhaps a list of saints, or the names of those that this letter was intended to protect. Though the letter claims to have been written by Jesus himself, an anonymous author likely composed the original letter sometime in the third century AD. This letter purported to be from Jesus to Abgar, or variations of the original letter, were later copied for purchase, intended to protect the bearer of the letter. Our example is one of the copies from the 7th-8th Century AD. This particular letter was likely folded up and kept on the body for healing or protection from demons. The names at the end of the letter may be list of Christian saints that lends apotropaic power to the letter. The letter from Jesus to Abgar is the second part of an apocryphal correspondence between Jesus and Abgar, king of Edessa, in which Abgar requests healing from Jesus after suffering from an incurable illness, perhaps gout or leprosy, depending on the source. Jesus responds with a promise to send in his place an apostle to heal the king. Jesus_ reply is one of the few texts from antiquity that purports to have been written by Jesus himself. This story was recorded by the Roman historian Eusebius (260/265-339/340 AD) in the 'Church History', a the first historical narrative written from the Christian point of view. The letter is nearly intact, in very stable conditio, and mounted in a display frame. 7 in x 1 in (18.7 x 4.5 cm). Ex Hamdy Sakr collection; previously in the private collection of Alex Anckonie III, acquired during his time in the Navy in the 1960's - 1970's.
