ANTONIO JACOBSEN (NY/NJ, 1850-1921) - Marine portrait of Two-Masted Steam Sail Ship "El Rio", oil on board, signed lower right "Antonio Jacobsen, 1909, 39 Palisades Avenue, West Hoboken", depicts the ship at full steam with sails down in a storm, El Rio was the first steamer built for the Morgan Line by the Newport News Shipbuilding Company and was the largest American merchant steamer of its time, in the original period gold leaf frame, SS: 22" x 36", OS: 29" x 42 1/2". Frame has lower left gesso corner missing, painting is in very good condition. This painting was recently discovered in an attic in Sargentville, ME where it has been stored since 1972.
