ANDREW NEWELL WYETH (PA/ME, 1917-2009)

ANDREW NEWELL WYETH (PA/ME, 1917-2009)

Item Description:

The Olson House, Cushing, Maine, a study of the back of the house (viewed from the other side in Wyeth's iconic "Christina's World,"), gifted to Christina herself, plein air, mixed media on paper, painted in 1942 (per the Farnsworth Museum Curator). Inscribed lower right: "To Christina and Alvaro, from Betsy and Andy", with tag on back that reads "Property of Mrs. Betty Olson, Cushing, Me." In black stick frame, matted and glazed, OS: 17 1/2" x 27 1/2", SS: 10 3/4" x 21 1/4". Scattered foxing in the sky.

Per the consignor, John W. Olson, Sr.: "My wife and I walked up to the house shortly after Christina passed (Jan 1968). She had never been through the house, so I gave her a tour and showed her the room where I was born. My father came shortly after we got there to start cleaning things out. My wife found this painting on the floor of the studio in Alvaro's bedroom and said 'I'd like to have this,' and my father said, 'Sure'.

"One night when Andy and Betsy came to the restaurant my wife showed them the painting. Betsy took it and told us she would frame it for us. When she brought it back, all framed, we hung it in the restaurant for a while. For the safety of the painting I took it to Thomaston Bank to store it in the vault. A few years later, the bank called and asked if we would take it out because they felt something might happen to it. So, I took it to the Farnsworth and they kept it."
