stamped 'BARTON SILVER', c.1940s, inscribed 'THE / BYCULLA CLUB / CUP / BOMBAY RACES / 1940 / THE BYCULLA TURF / 1814'

the tall hand-beaten trophy of tapering thistle shape with three handles, the slim stem descending to a circular stepped foot, the lid with a pear-shaped fluted finial, total gross weight 2,685 gms.

Height 26 3/8 in. (67 cm.)

For a major part of the 19th century, horse racing in Bombay was held at Byculla until, in 1883, the venue was shifted to Mahalakshmi. It was long before when Dorabji Rustomji, the Patel of Bombay, acquired land at Byculla to conduct racing. The venue was opposite the Byculla Club and the balcony of the Club's building served as a private stand for members. The Byculla Club was renowned for its famed roast suckling pig and pistachio souffle lunches.


The first running of the Byculla Club Cup was in 1929. It was a handicap race for Class I and Class II run over a distance of 1 3/4 miles.
