About The Artist:

Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young founded Tiffany & Company in 1837 in New York City as a "stationery and fancy goods emporium." The store initially sold a wide variety of stationery items, and operated as "Tiffany, Young and Ellis" in lower Manhattan. Later, the name was shortened to Tiffany and the firm mainly concentrated on jewelry and silverware.

Although founded the same year that Queen Victoria ascended the throne, the American firm diverged from the style that came to be associated with the Victorian era and developed a style that more represented American taste, one of simplicity and inspired by nature. In the mid-19th century, Tiffany became the first American silversmith to adopt the English standard of sterling, 925/1000.  Previously, American silver was mostly made in the coin standard, approximately 900/1000. Charles Tiffany led the drive to force the rest of the silver industry to officially adopt this standard.>br/>
Tiffany's uniquely American designs were awarded a grand prize at the 1867 Paris World's Fair, a breakthrough for the New World trying to compete with the long-established European dominancy in the area of silver craftsmanship. Under the presidency of Edward C. Moore, the firm's designs became even more linked to inspirations from nature. In the 20th century, a taste for more traditional designs returned.
