This is possibly a portrait of Henry Laurens Pinckney (September 24, 1794-February 3, 1863), a U.S. Representative from South Carolina, and the son of Charles Pinckney (signatory of the United States Declaration of Independence). Henry L. Pinckney founded the Charleston Mercury Newspaper in 1819 and was its sole editor for fifteen years. The subject of this work has been painted holding a copy of the Mercury.
