AMERICAN COLONIAL MILITARY APPOINTMENT - Sept 11th, 1723 Appointment of William Gaylord (1670-1743) as the Ensign of Company of Trainband, New Milford (CT). Signed by Governor Gordon Saltonstall (1666-1724, in office 1708-1724) and Secy of State George Wyllys, with wax seal, fully handwritten. Gaylord, a Harvard graduate, was an ancestor of Ulysses S. Grant, founder of Gaylordsville, CT. Saltonstall was C in C of the State Militia during Queen Anne's War (1702-1713), later US Supreme Court Chief Justice.
