Regarding the Canvas-Backed Duck, Audubon explains, “In the Plate are represented two Males and a Female. In the background is a view of Baltimore, which I have had great pleasure in introducing, on account of the hospitality which I have there experienced, and the generosity of its inhabitants...” Additionally, he writes that the canvas-backed duck “ found in much greater numbers on the Chesapeake and the streams that flow into it, than anywhere else.” He also prophetically reports, “The quantity of fowl of late years has been decidedly less than in times gone by; and I have met with persons who have assured me that the number has decreased one-half in the last fifteen years.”
Overall good condition with strong color; loose, edges discolored with several small creases and small restored tears along edges.
