About The Artist:

Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clésinger was born in 1814 in in Besançon, a town in Doubs, in the Franche-Comté region of eastern France. Clésinger came from a family of artists, and he was trained at an early age by his father. By the age of 29 in 1843, Clésinger had gained enough prestige to exhibit at the Paris Salon where he showed a bust of Vicomte Jules de Valdahon. Over his lifetime, the artist made his famous sculptures including "Woman Bitten by a Serpent", "Via Dolorosa", all of which exhibiting at the Paris Salon. Clésinger's models included Apollonie Sabatier, the mistress of Charles Baudelaire, as well as other salonnières of the period.

He received the Knight's Cross of the Légion d'honneur in 1849 and rose to an officer of the order in 1864, the year he last exhibited at the Paris Salon.
Upon French composer Frederic Chopin's death on 17 October 1849, Clésinger molded the composer's death mask and a cast of his hands. He also sculpted, in 1850, the white marble funerary monument of "Euterpe, the muse of music", for Chopin's grave at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Like the famous composer for whom he created the funerary monument, Clésinger was buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery upon his death in 1883.
