the body of the jar covered with six scenes executed in high relief, with subjects from the Hindu epics and Indian mythology, after compositions by Raja Ravi Varma, each placed within its own cartouche, and placed within an upper foliate band and lower band of acanthus leaves, the lid surmounted by a large finial of Lord Ganesh surrounded by a ring of acanthus leaves, its central register executed in high relief with a continuous circle of figures engaged in a leisurely folk dance, and the lowest wider register with a leaf and foliate pattern, the circular foot of the jar decorated with a band of acanthus leaves, weight 3,071 gms.
Height 19 1/8 in. (48.6 cm.)
Terry Ware jars, with similar finials, were created by the Bombay School around 1870 and may well have influenced the form of the current jar.
