Meiji Period, late 19th Century



cast in sections and mounted on a circular base, the base depicts a warrior in a rocky landscape defeating a demon, above which is a low circular table, on which a dragon supports a globular jar decorated with a foaming wave pattern, which itself supports five stylised seated elephants with raised trunks that surround the foot of a large baluster shaped lidded jar, the jar is decorated with two panels of differing patterns, the first with swallows or swifts in flight, the second depicting a river scene with figures in conversation, the scenes are flanked by two impressive dragon handles, the lid cast with two small children and two large toads, one child raises his hand to the sky perhaps in expectation of the forthcoming spring showers
