A huge Etruscan Bucchero Oinochoe

A huge Etruscan Bucchero Oinochoe

Item Description:

A huge Etruscan Bucchero Oinochoe, Italic, c. 550 - 500 BC, the body with two horizontal bands of molded relief, the upper most depicting lions, griffons and stags, the lower with charging horseman and foot soldiers holding shields and winged griffins, another band around the neck with a procession including soldiers flanking a chariot with a horseman behind. The vessel is constructed in a very lavish style with large pouring spout, flat handle with vertical grooves and a wide, splayed foot. H: 17 in (43.2 cm). Professionally restored and a magnificent example of Etruscan Bucchero pottery. Ex Joseph Klein 1899-1987 collected in the manner of an 18th century connoisseur. He surrounded himself with an amazingly diverse array of artifacts acquired over nearly forty-five years of collecting. His collecting tastes encompassed the arts of ancient China, Egypt, Persia, Greece and Rome. Contrasting these antiquities with European Gothic and Renaissance objects to souvenirs of the Grand Tour, Joseph Klein can truly be described as a Renaissance man whose scope and breadth of collecting would no longer be possible in today's world.
