A GROUP OF CARVED FURNITURE

Item Description:

comprising a 'prie-dieu' chair with a low seat and four curved legs, a carved and pierced back with a scrolling pattern of branches and leaves, a pair of end tables with an overall etched pattern, and a stool, the seat carved on all four sides with a dense high-relief pattern of foliage and flowers (4)

Chair Height 35 in. (88.9 cm.) Table Height 18 1/4 in. (46.3 cm.) and smaller

‘Prie-dieu’ chairs were low chairs designed specifically for prayer. ‘The low seat was meant to be used for kneeling and the top rail, which was usually upholstered, as an elbow rest or Bible support.’ (Amin Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, New Delhi, 2001, p. 337) The current example is similar in design to a chair in the Victoria and Albert Museum Collection, see A. Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, New Delhi, 2001, p. 336, fig. 153. Both examples are Bombay blackwood, and have a carved ‘cresting’ on top.
