Virgil Apger (1903-1994) was an American photographer known for portrait photography and scene stills of film stars. Born in Grant County, Indiana he worked as a studio photographer at MGM from 1931 to 1969. He became head of MGM’s portrait gallery in 1947 and photographed numerous film stars, including Greta Garbo, Esther Williams, Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, Gene Kelly, and Elizabeth Taylor. He also shot cover images for American magazines, including LIFE, Look, and Photoplay. He is the only Hollywood photographer who has received an Academy Award. He received the award in 1942 for his production stills of Green Garson in Mrs. Minniver.
