Photograph of Ben Kilpatrick and Ole Hobeck in Death After the Sanderson Train Robbery

Photograph of Ben Kilpatrick and Ole Hobeck in Death After the Sanderson Train Robbery

Item Description:

Photograph of Ben Kilpatrick and Ole Hobeck in Death After the Sanderson Train Robbery.

7" x 5" (death photo), mounted. Written in plate and then traced over in ink, “TWO TRAIN ROBBERS KILLED NEAR SANDERSON TEX MAR 13 1912 / PHOTO BY NOGLE”.

Kilpatrick’s and Hobeck’s bodies are being held upright for a macabre photo at the Sanderson Train Station. Among the men is David Trousdale, the Wells Fargo Express Messenger who killed Kilpatrick with an ice mallet, and then shot Hobeck with Kilpatrick’s rifle. Trousdale’s personal account of the attempted robbery, which Wells Fargo released to the public, is quite riveting.

Provenance:

From the Robert G. McCubbin Collection.
