Main Central R. R. / Snow Train. c. 1940.
From 1862 through 1972, the Main Central Railroad ran from southern to central Maine, taking passengers as far as Quebec, Canada. The “Snow Train,” first named in 1931, was in fact any passenger service running during ski season up to popular winter sport locations. It was developed as a direct response to the local effort to develop downhill skiing as a tourist attraction. Typically, it left the North Station in Boston on a Friday afternoon for North Conway (Mount Cranmore) in Maine, and returned the following Sunday, allowing for the perfect weekend getaway.
