Gold Dollar Cigarettes.
“Gold Dollar,” an American cigarette that was popular in both France and Switzerland, as well as at home–the packaging boasts of gold medals won at both the Philadelphia (1876) and Paris (1878) World’s Fairs–chooses a Hollywood-style glamor route to promote its product in this Armstrong poster, eluding to the fact that their smokes can make one desirous, glamorous and gorgeous. As Walt Reed makes it clear, Armstrong’s many “spectacular portrayals of beautiful models and movie stars [were] glamorized to the ultimate degree” (p. 164). Of course, this golden girl isn’t even shown with a cigarette in-hand. But, when it comes to advertising a vice, association is the name of the game.
