Babes in Toyland. 1904.
Were it not for the success of the stage musical version of The Wizard of Oz the year before this poster’s production, there may never have been a Babes in Toyland. For, you see, Babes was a studied attempt to write another Wizard of Oz and capitalize on its giant success. And though imitators tend to be nothing more than faded carbon copies of the original, Babes in Toyland–a huge spectacle with a formidable cast and lavish sets–turned out to be a triumph in its own right and a childhood classic. The plot–such as it is–serves primarily as an excuse to present characters from fairy tales, children's story books and nursery rhymes in spectacular style, piecing the proceedings together with a rich and varied succession of musical episodes. This promotion from the show’s initial run presents us with the dollish image of Mabel Barrison in the role of Jane, the niece of the miserly Uncle Barnaby, who along with her brother Alan escape to Toyland. After a series of fairy tale adventures, they eventually free themselves from the evil clutches of Barnaby–he mistakenly swallows poison that he intended to give the siblings–and enjoy their life for ever more.
