Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) was an American Pop artist known for his stylized nudes. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he attended the University of Cincinnati and later attended Cooper Union in New York. In the early 1960s, the artist began making small collages and assemblages which included everyday imagery from magazines, advertisements, and consumer culture. In 1961, he began his Great American Nude series characterized by flat, bold colors. The artist’s work increased in scale in the 1970s, and he began painting simple objects on shapes canvases in his Standing Still Life series.He later created cut-out compositions in aluminum, enamel, and style. Towards the end of his career, he returned to female nudes and created the Sunset Nude series.
